Cookie policy
This notice explains how Book Leaves uses cookies and similar technologies on the Site, and how you can manage them. It should be read with our Privacy policy.
1. Who we are and how to contact us
The Site is operated by Webedia GmbH, Cuvrystraße 3–4, 10997 Berlin. Questions about cookies or privacy: info@bookleaves.com. See also Contact and the Imprint.
2. About this cookie policy
When you use the Site, information may be collected through cookies and similar technologies so we can offer a usable, secure service and — where you consent — measure use and show interest-based advertising. “Cookies” in this policy includes cookies, local storage, pixels and comparable technologies.
3. What are cookies and similar technologies?
A cookie is a small data file, often with a unique identifier, sent to your browser and stored so a site or partner can recognise the browser or device and understand browsing activity. Local storage can perform similar functions. Pixels and tags help measure page views or ad delivery.
Session and persistent
Session cookies usually last for a visit and are deleted when you close the browser. Persistent cookies remain for a set period after the browser closes so we or a partner can recognise a later visit.
First-party and third-party
First-party cookies are set by the Site. Third-party cookies are set by other organisations (for example analytics or advertising partners) when their tools run on our pages.
4. What are cookies used for on this Site?
Our consent interface uses the categories below. Your choice is stored on your device for this publication only. We do not reuse consent records from other brands.
Necessary (essential)
Required to provide the Site securely — for example load balancing, security and storing your consent decision. These cannot be switched off through Cookie settings.
Preferences (functional)
Optional memories of interface choices that are not required for basic browsing. Used only if you allow this category.
Analytics (performance and measurement)
Help us understand how readers use the Site so we can improve content and performance. Used only with your consent.
Advertising (including personalisation partners)
Placed by us and advertising or recommendation partners to deliver and measure more relevant ads and related content recommendations (including partners such as Taboola). These may gather browsing activity across visits. In the UK we rely on your consent via the cookie banner and Cookie settings before placing these cookies.
Advertising cookies do not store your name, postal address, email address or IP address in the cookie file itself. Related processing (for example IP in server logs or partner requests) is described in the Privacy policy.
5. Why we use cookies
- to make the Site work and keep it secure;
- to remember choices you ask us to remember;
- to understand audience size and reading patterns when you allow analytics; and
- to fund journalism through advertising and recommendations when you allow advertising cookies.
6. How you can manage cookie preferences
On first visit, a banner lets you accept or reject optional categories. You can change your mind at any time using Cookie settings in the site footer. Withdrawing consent does not affect processing that was lawful before withdrawal.
You can also refuse or delete cookies in your browser. If you block all cookies (including necessary ones), some Site functions may not work fully.
7. How long cookies last
Session cookies usually end when the browsing session ends. Persistent cookies typically last up to 12 months and at most 24 months unless a specific tool states otherwise. Partner durations are described in Cookie settings where partners are active.
8. Third parties
Analytics or advertising partners may set their own cookies and process data under their notices and under joint-controller arrangements described in the Privacy policy. Partner categories are explained in Cookie settings.
